Football concussion clinics

The Hawaii Football Club will host a speed and agility clinic, featuring renown trainer Chad Ikei, on Friday, May 2 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. for grades 3 to 12 at the Hilo Bayfront back field. The cost is one canned good to support the local food basket.

HFC will host an advanced speed and agility clinic for HFC members Saturday, May 3 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the St. Joseph School field. Following will be a combine prep for high school ages from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is one canned good.

The Hawaii Concussion Awareness Management Program will host a seminar on Thursday, May 8 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Glad Tidings Church, 113 Kuawa St. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m.

Dr. Nathan Murata, from UH Manoa, and Ross Oshiro, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, will be the guest speakers. Topics include concussion recognition, return to play protocol, concussion cases in Hawaii and concussion management.

Parents, athletes, teachers, administrators, referees, and health care professionals are encouraged to attend. Admission is free.

UHH booster luncheon

The public is invited to the Hilo Vulcan Booster Club’s monthly luncheon at noon today at the Coqui’s Hideaway Restaurant.

Guest speakers for this final lunch of the school year will be the coaches and players of the UHH men’s and women’s golf teams. Both recently captured their respective PacWest Conference golf championship. The women will compete in the West Region championships next week in Texas.

Drive, Chip & Putt to Augusta

The Drive, Chip & Putt Championship Local Qualifier will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 24 at Hilo Muni for boys and girls ages 7-15. Register online at dripchipandputt.com. Deadline is May 19.

Kitagawa gets second hole-in-one

Joshua Kitagawa aced the par 3 130-yard third hole on Sunday at Volcano Golf Course with a gap wedge. It was the 2013 Hilo High graduate’s second ever hole-in-one. Witnessing the special feat was Tim Kitagawa.
